Many activities: Dr Chan (left) and Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip launching the state’s tourism calendar of events for 2011.

The Tourism and Heritage Ministry has launched a one-stop shop to assist international conference organisers while they hold events in the state.Targeted at the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) market, the shop will attend to the inquiries and requirements of conference organisers in relation to government procedures and logistics.

The ministry’s principal assistant secretary Mary Wan Mering said it would boost Sarawak’s image as an attractive venue for meetings and conferences.“A lot of professional conference organisers, when organising a conference, want it to be smooth, fast and hassle-free.

But there is a lot of logistics and protocol involved, such as immigration and security.“The ministry and the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) decided to set up a MICE one-stop shop to handle the inquiries of conference organisers and solve their requests efficiently,” she said during the shop’s launch in Kuching on Monday night by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan, who is also the Tourism and Heritage Minister.Mary said the one-stop shop would work hand-in-hand with SCB to find out the needs and requirements of conference organisers.“SCB will bid for international conferences to be held here.

Once the bid is won, it will pass to us the list of inquiries and requirements from the organisers which we will then attend to,” she said.Meanwhile, Dr Chan also launched the state’s tourism calendar of events for 2011 featuring over 50 musical, religious, sports, city and cultural events.
