THE Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) plans to set up a commando mini-museum in Bario to commemorate local tribal warriors and British and Australian commandos who helped liberate the state from Japanese occupation during World War II.
STF heritage development committee chairman Lim Kian Hock said the mini-museum would be a unique tourist attraction which would enhance Sarawak’s wartime heritage.
“A memorial sculpture was put up in Bario on March 25 to pay tribute to the local warriors and commandos who made a parachute landing there in 1945.
“STF has also done feasibility studies on coming up with tour packages for visitors to experience the commandos’ trail in the forest. A commando mini-museum will enhance these efforts,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Lim added that Prof Bob Reece from Australia’s Murdoch University, who paid him a courtesy call recently, was keen on the idea of the mini-museum and would assist where possible.
Reece is the author of Masa Jepun: Sarawak Under the Japanese 1941-1945 and other books on Sarawak’s history.
